We aim to create a place in Berlin that brings together knowledge, creativity and innovation in contemporary hand weaving.
The Studio
Studio JUMI is strongly influenced and inspired by the former weaving workshops of the Bauhaus School in Weimar, Germany and Black Mountain College in North Carolina, USA. Many of the pioneering textile artists who have shaped current perceptions of textile art, such as Anni Albers, Sheila Hicks, and Lenore Tawney, were students and teachers at those institutions. Today, with the growing recognition of textiles as a medium in contemporary art, there is renewed appreciation for those types of collaborative creative spaces and for the value of craftsmanship.
As the founders of Studio JUMI, we aim to create a place in Berlin that brings together knowledge, creativity, and innovation in contemporary hand weaving. Based on the philosophy of the early years of the Bauhaus School, we seek to re-establish the relationship between art and craft by bridging the gap between artisan mastery and contemporary art making.
In addition to our own work as artists, we engage in collaborations with designers, architects, and visual artists by providing both our skills and our technical knowledge. For those interested in exploring weaving through hands-on experience, we offer monthly weaving classes. Our well-equipped weaving studio includes a tapestry loom and multiple floor looms, some of which are close to 100 years old. We also warmly invite both experienced weavers and aspiring textile artists interested in weaving their own projects to join us in the studio and weave on one of our looms.
Studio JUMI is open for visits. Feel free to contact us and schedule a meeting. We look forward to welcoming you.
